CSVS Position Statement on Mandatory Use of Protective Neck Guards

In response to the recent on-ice tragedy involving former NHL hockey player Adam Johnson, who tragically passed away on October 28, 2023, as a result of a neck laceration secondary to a skate blade injury, the Canadian Society for Vascular Surgery recommends the immediate and mandatory use of protective neck guards across all levels of ice hockey. These proactive safety measures can significantly reduce the risk of injury or loss of life. We extend our sincere condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of Adam Johnson.
Self Care is Not Selfish

Addressing the state of wellness amongst Canadian Vascular Surgeons

When we chose our careers, we committed ourselves to helping others. Our clinical work reflects an armamentarium for managing complex conditions but it is the patients and the families, the difficult conversations and the invested trust, the connections and the gratitude that defines what it means to be a provider of surgical care. We also commit ourselves to our families and friends; the relationships that sustain and inspire us in different but equally important ways.

What about our commitment to helping ourselves? ...
Read article by Dr. Giuseppe Papia

VQI Collaboration

VQI Discounts for Canadian Sites

VQI’s 14 registries contain demographic, clinical, procedural and outcomes data from more than 650,000 vascular procedures performed nationwide and in Canada. Each record includes information from the patient’s initial hospitalization and at one-year follow-up.

The wealth of data allows centers and providers to compare their performance to regional and national benchmarks.

Each center and provider receive biannual dashboards and regular performance reports, so they can use their data to support quality improvement initiatives.

·Biannual regional meetings allow physicians, nurses, data managers, quality officers, and others to meet, share information and ideas, and learn from each other in a positive and supportive environment.

Where VQI data are used to:

Significantly improve the delivery of vascular care at a local and national level, reducing complications and expenses.

Stratify risk, analyze outcomes, develop quality improvement, define best clinical practices, assess comparative effectiveness research and improve resource utilization.

Facilitate participation in clinical trials and other medical device evaluation efforts.

Collaborate with multiple organizations, including the American College of Cardiology, Society of Interventional Radiology, governmental regulatory agencies, device manufacturers, and payers

Help provide clinically detailed data for device performance, post-market surveillance, and label expansion

Partner with vascular registries from Europe and Asia to form the International Consortium of Vascular Registries (ICVR) to bring a global perspective to improving vascular care and device evaluation.

The discount is for new Canadian sites only, the first year will be 25% and the second year will be 15%. This is based on the current annual fees. The 2020 total annual fees per procedure registry is $2,590( M2S Subscription fee of $1850 and SVS PSO fee of $$740). So the $2,590 - 25% would be $1,943 per procedure registry in year one. If prices stay the same for year two the cost would be $2,590 - 15% = $2,202.

The one time setup fee is $5,000 which covers, legal fee, IT fees involved with contracting such as security questionnaires, training and account setup. Currently there are seven sites across Canada participating. https://www.vqi.org/regional-groups/current-regional-quality-groups/canadian-vascular-quality-initiative

Any questions or for further information please reach out to me (graham.roche-nagle@uhn.ca) or M2S Business Development Representative Deborah MacAulay (macaulay@m2s.com)

The mission of VQI is to improve the quality, safety, effectiveness and cost of vascular healthcare.

The Vascular Quality Initiative® (VQI®) is a collaboration of the Society for Vascular Surgery Patient Safety Organization (SVS PSO), 18 regional quality improvement groups organized under the SVS PSO, and Medstreaming/M2S, its commercial technology partner.

Other partners include the American Venous Forum (AVF), the Society for Vascular Medicine (SVM), Vascular Access Society of America (VASA) and the Society of Vascular Ultrasound (SVU), along with an additional 16 endorsing societies .

The SVS PSO is an LLC of the Society for Vascular Surgery, with headquarters in Chicago. The SVS PSO governs all functions of VQI, including the specification of data elements captured in each registry, the types of standard reports made available to regional groups, member hospitals and physicians, and national quality improvement projects sponsored by VQI.

The SVS PSO is also supported by 170 physician volunteers who dedicate their time and effort in support of the VQI mission. These physicians provide governance, clinical support to all the registries and data analyses and ad-hoc support in areas such as industry partnerships and communications.

Each center and region have lead physicians and regional medical directors to provide guidance, identify best practices and develop regional initiatives.

The SVS PSO is funded by annual registry subscription fees from participating hospitals or physician groups, and additional contributions for VQI projects are provided by corporate supporters.

About the CVQI

Choosing Wisely Canada

On June 2, 2015 the CSVS released a list of “Five Things Physicians and Patients Should Question” in Vascular Surgery as part of the Choosing Wisely Canada campaign. The list identifies five targeted, evidence-based recommendations that can support physicians and patients in making wise choices about their care. Through the Choosing Wisely Canada campaign and the publication of this list, CSVS is helping physicians and patients engage in conversations about potentially unnecessary tests, treatments and procedures, and supporting physician efforts to help patients make smart and effective choices to ensure high-quality care. CSVS joined the campaign because its leadership recognizes that physicians have a professional, moral and ethical responsibility to take the lead in addressing these challenges.
